This category recognizes excellence and forward thinking in the design of a single, detached residence by an Architect or Building Designer. The project must be an appropriate response to the brief and landscape as well as set new benchmarks in Australian design. Entrants must submit their entry into the appropriate under-roof size category

Category 4 - Best Residential Construction
This award recognizes building professionals who excel in the implementation of an architectural design. The entrant needs to demonstrate quality workmanship and skill particularly in the construction of difficult elements or with unusual materials.
Category 5 - Best Alterations and Additions
This award recognizes the outstanding design of a renovation, extension or significant reworking of an existing dwelling. Entries need to detail the house in its entirety and include any work done to restore original features as well as that done to extend or rework the structure. Please describe the building itself as well as the interior and outdoor areas. Entrant must be able to demonstrate appropriate response to brief.
Category 6 - Best Sustainable Design
This category awards outstanding achievement with regards to innovation in the sustainable design of a single, detached and mulit-residential dwelling. Entries need to demonstrate their ranking in relevant residential rating scales and outline how the design implements local and global considerations to address building life cycle and water and energy efficiency.
Category 7 - Best Small Project
This category recognizes the outstanding design of a single residential building that encompasses NO MORE THAN 150sqm. The design must demonstrate response to brief as well as the effective and innovative use of space in such a way that it challenges common notions of how much space is needed for comfortable, modern living.
Category 8 - Best Construction on a Difficult Site
This award recognizes building professionals who excel in the implementation of an architectural design that is constructed on a site imposing significant restrictions such as severe slope or limited access.
Category 9 - Best Multi-Residential Design
This category recognizes the outstanding design of a newly built or renovated multi-residential development. Eligible projects include apartments, units, duplexes and townhouses. Excluded from this category is any form of short-term accommodation such as hotels. The design must exhibit thoughtfulness to the proximately of the residences and incorporate not just aesthetic pleasing features but also those that elicit privacy.
Category 10 - Best Multi-Residential Construction
This category recognizes the outstanding implementation of the design of a newly built or renovated multi-residential development. Eligible projects include apartments, units, duplexes, townhouses and dual occupancy. The entrant must demonstrate quality of workmanship and skill particularly in the construction of difficult elements or with unusual materials.
Category 11 - Best Interior
This category awards interior design and decoration at its best. Interior design projects can only include environments within a new or refurbished residential home. The award takes into account the entirety of the interior program; hence entries must pertain to the interior design and decoration scheme of an entire home or renovation. Individual rooms cannot be entered in this category.
Category 12 - Best Kitchen
This category recognizes the outstanding design of a residential, indoor kitchen. Taken into account are the layout of the space and its responsiveness to surrounding rooms, materials used (i.e. splashbacks, benchtop material etc.) and the inclusion of modern conveniences.
Category 13 - Best Bathroom
This category recognizes the outstanding design of a residential bathroom or en suite. Taken into account are the layout of the space, ease of use and passage between major elements (i.e. bath, shower, basin etc). The materials used to articulate the design will also be considered.
Category 14 - Best Conceptual Design
This category recognizes innovative, un-built designs of single, detached, residential projects. The entrant will be judged on overall design, floor plan and appropriateness to expected context as well as the comprehensiveness of its conceptual presentation.
Category 15 - Best Architectural Photography
This category awards outstanding photography of architectural projects entered in one or more of the Abode House of the Year Award categories. The photographer must exhibit skill in shooting architecture in such a way that it enhances the project’s best features. Projects shot during the day as well as at night are highly regarded but not necessary.
